Lichtenfeld immigrated to Mandatory Palestine (later Israel), joining the Haganah, an elite Jewish paramilitary organization which would later form the core of Israel Defense Forces. He was charged with training Kapap and Palmach units as well as groups of security / police personnel.
Krav Maga’s original form, Kapap, or face-to-face combat or battle, combined elements from boxing, judo, wrestling, stick fighting, knife fighting and gun disarming into its methodology. Kapap was unique because there were no rules in street fighting – its emphasis being simultaneous defense and attack using continuous motion (retzev).
Lichtenfeld was an instructor with Haganah until 1948 when, following IDF service during the War of Independence, he officially joined their staff as an IDF instructor.
