Krav maga, developed by Israel Defense Forces, is an intuitive self-defense system with practical applications and intuitive movements, emphasizing realistic training scenarios and instinctive responses.

Origins

Anti-Semitic gangs began attacking Jewish neighborhoods of Bratislava, Czechoslovakia during the mid 1930s. Imi Lichtenfeld used his skills as a boxer and wrestler to defend them but quickly found that sport fighting required different mindsets and techniques than life-or-death fighting.

Lichtenfeld immigrated to Mandatory Palestine (later Israel), joining the Haganah, an elite Jewish paramilitary organization which would later form the core of Israel Defense Forces. He was charged with training Kapap and Palmach units as well as groups of security / police personnel.krav maga training

Krav Maga’s original form, Kapap, or face-to-face combat or battle, combined elements from boxing, judo, wrestling, stick fighting, knife fighting and gun disarming into its methodology. Kapap was unique because there were no rules in street fighting – its emphasis being simultaneous defense and attack using continuous motion (retzev).

Lichtenfeld was an instructor with Haganah until 1948 when, following IDF service during the War of Independence, he officially joined their staff as an IDF instructor. From there he developed Krav Maga for civilian use by adapting military training for civilian use; teaching it to his students including Grandmaster Rhon Mizrachi who studied under Imi for many years before going on to establish Krav Maga Worldwide under his tutelage.

Another basic technique is the roundhouse kick. This leg attack can be used to knock an opponent to the ground, deflect their kicks or break their balance – particularly effective when cornered and cannot retreat.
